Code Her Future: A New Initiative from GGAC

October 5, 2018

Give Girls A Chance's mission is to improve access to education and skills training for girls and women from disadvantaged and marginalized communities. With that in mind, we are pleased to announce a new, long-term project called Code Her Future, which is designed to empower women currently living in internally displaced persons (IDP) camps in Nigeria.

Currently, there are about 1,881,198 IDPs in Nigeria. Of this number, approximately 30,000 live in 12 (officially recorded) IDP camps in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja. It is estimated that 70 percent of the inhabitants of these camps are women and children, and a majority of the women between the ages of 18 and 35 years are unemployed.

Code Her Future will support Nigerian refugee women aged 18 to 25 by teaching them how to code, providing them with mentoring and career training, and linking them to potential employers. The program will provide economic opportunities for the women by equipping them with a skill that is applicable across different sectors and can be leveraged to address challenges in their communities.

To begin, the program will involve working with women living in two IDP camps in Abuja. Following a sensitization period, the women will complete a 9-month coding program offered by two partner academies, from which they will emerge as certified web developers. In the following two months, they will receive job skills training and work with their peers from two local universities to develop web or mobile apps. The women will also be linked to potential employers at the end of the program.

We are excited about the potential of Code Her Future and the opportunities that it will create. As we work to make this a reality, we welcome donations and support on an ongoing basis. If you would like to learn more, please don't hesitate to contact us at info@givegirlsachanceng.org
