Women's Day Experience at Lea Primary School, Abuja

The Women's Day was such a remarkable day for me as that was my first time participating in such an event. Women's Day has always been celebrated worldwide but I, for one reason or another, have never been a partaker of any event on that day.

My experience in LEA Primary School Area 1, Garki was such that will always remain in my memory for ever. The theme of the March 8th event was "Be bold for change." I was lucky enough to share a message in which I highlighted key reasons why parents should pay much attention to the education of their girls.

Parents of the girls under our program at GGAC were present and that served as an avenue to remind them to help bring out the best from their girls. We had other talks from board members of the FCT Primary Education Board in which some of the delegates gave clear evidence to the audience on how educating girls helped so many families including theirs. This was so remarkable as it came from people the parents look up to.

The highlight of the day was a debate competition that the pupils had on the need for girls to go to school. Points were raised for and against and at the end of the day, the girls won the competition in favor of girls' education. The pupils were so eloquent, especially the girls, that it made so clear that boys were not better than girls in any way, which further drove home the point that investing in girls is worth it for parents. Studies have shown that educated girls are impactful in every society, but developing countries still lag behind with regards female education, hence the need for NGOs to assist the government in bridging that gap.

At the end of the day, I was interviewed by representatives of Voice of America, and I shared what my role is as a mentor to the girls, what I plan to achieve, what GGAC has done so far, and what we plan to do in the future. Take a look at some of the pictures from the event below.
