International Day of The Girl Child 2022: Our time is now—our rights, our future

Updated: Feb 6, 2023

It is imperative the rights of the girl child isn't undermined as it has been, dating back history in different parts of the world owing to religious and socio-cultural beliefs which transcends to outright trample and manipulation of human rights and rights of the girl child.

This age long abuse of girl child rights births the poor representation of women in politics more so to number of girls in classrooms. The UN Women organisation data on women's leadership and political participation from 136 countries shows that women constitutes only 34 per cent of elected members in local deliberative bodies with Rwanda ranking the the highest at 61.25% . This continuous marginalisation resulted to women being least qualified to run for public offices, bottle-necks encountered in the system as a result of being a girl child or a woman , electoral disenfranchisement, property inheritance, early marriage thereby distorting the growth of the girl child, exposing her to dangers and ills of the society as well as developmental and health risks.

The world would be a better place if rights of the girl child are not infringed upon, if they are given the right to education amongst other rights taken away from the girl child. Let us all join hands to empower the girl child and amplify their voices to ensure these girls grow to be notable and confident women in our society.

Bearing in mind our responsibility of giving the girl child a sense of importance and creating a platform for better future we joined in celebrating every girl child across the globe on the 10th anniversary of the International Day of the Girl Child. Mirroring the vision and mission of Give Girls A Chance and the theme of this year's IDG "Our time is now—our rights, our future." Annually we host an Essay competition on the theme of the year to educate the girl child directly and indirectly, to be empowered gradually addressing the challenge faced by the girl child.

Please join in amplifying the voice of the girl child from your end through donations and support until the gap is closed.
