In 2024, Give Girls A Chance (GGAC) made significant strides in its mission to support and empower young girls in Nigeria through education, mentorship, and community involvement. Founded in 2016 by Dr. Hauwa Balami and Uloma Ogba, GGAC has remained steadfast in its commitment to addressing the educational disparities faced by girls. This year, GGAC provided scholarships, school supplies, and mentorship to 68 girls across four partner schools in Abuja.
Reflecting on the year’s achievements, the founders expressed pride in the resilience and progress of the girls supported by GGAC. The organization’s comprehensive approach focuses on not only providing financial aid but also engaging with families and communities to create a nurturing environment for girls to thrive. GGAC’s work this year was marked by several impactful programs and events.
GGAC celebrated the International Day of the Girl Child by visiting schools and hosting sessions that inspired and motivated girls to overcome challenges and pursue their dreams. The organization also hosted its annual essay competition, where girls expressed their thoughts on empowerment and education. The winners, Abigail Ezeh, Adiele Jennifer, and Favour Gomina, were recognized for their creativity and insight.
In collaboration with the PAGED Initiative, GGAC organized the 6th edition of the “Watch Women Win” event for International Women’s Day. The event focused on inclusion and featured inspiring women leaders who shared their experiences and encouraged young girls to aim high. GGAC also conducted its Menstrual Hygiene Awareness Program, distributing 1,000 period kits to underserved communities and educating girls on menstrual health.
Safety was another critical focus, with GGAC teaming up with NAPTIP to educate students at LEA Primary School and JSS Area 1 on topics like rape prevention and human trafficking. The year concluded with a joyous celebration of the graduation of GGAC-supported girls from LEA Primary School, JSS Area 1, JSS Durumi, and JSS Gbessan, marking a significant milestone in their educational journey.
Looking ahead to the 2024/2025 school year, GGAC plans to expand its scholarship and mentorship program to support 50 more girls, extend its reach to two additional schools in Abuja, onboard more mentors and volunteers, and partner with government stakeholders to enhance educational opportunities. GGAC’s work would not be possible without the generous support of its donors, partners, and volunteers, who are crucial in helping the organization achieve its mission of empowering girls to reach their full potential.
