In 2024, Give Girls A Chance (GGAC) continued its essential work by addressing menstrual hygiene challenges faced by girls in Nigeria. Recognizing menstruation as a significant barrier to education for many girls, GGAC launched a Menstrual Hygiene Awareness Campaign under the theme “Together for a #PeriodFriendlyWorld.” The campaign was marked by the distribution of 1,000 period kits, containing sanitary pads, soaps, and detergents, to underserved communities in Abuja. This initiative reached two partner schools—Gbessan and GSS Apo Resettlement—and the women of the Kabusa community.
The campaign also involved educational outreach through lectures and interactive sessions, which focused on menstrual health education. These sessions debunked myths, provided practical advice on managing menstrual hygiene, and empowered girls with the knowledge and confidence needed to manage their periods effectively. The campaign was well-received, with participants expressing increased confidence and a better understanding of menstrual health. The distribution of period kits provided a crucial alternative to those who previously relied on less hygienic methods, significantly improving their menstrual hygiene.
Looking ahead, GGAC aims to continue its efforts by providing monthly supplies to students, forming partnerships with pad producers and distributors, and developing a Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) curriculum to be implemented in schools. These initiatives are intended to ensure sustainable menstrual hygiene solutions for girls across Nigeria.
The campaign’s success was made possible through partnerships with organizations like Water Support Charity, Preston Development Foundation, and Chrys Cares, along with the dedication of mentors, educators, and volunteers. GGAC expresses deep gratitude for the support received, which has had a profound impact on the lives of many young girls.
